The Catalan Article



As in all romance languages, there are two genders (feminine and masculine), and two numbers (singular and plural) for nouns and adjectives, articles, pronouns,etc.

The definite article

The Catalan definite article forms are:

Masculine Feminine
Singular el (l') la (l')
Plural els les

These are subject to the following:

Singular el llibre (the book)
l'home (the man)
la casa (the house)
l'ampolla (the bottle)
la universitat (the university)
Plural els llibres (the books)
els homes (the men)
les cases (the houses)
les ampolles (the bottles)
les universitats (the universities)


The indefinite article

The indefinite article forms are:

Note:
  • When addressing a friend, child or relative in Catalan the second person singular and plural forms are used. When addressing someone who does not fall into these categories a polite form is used: vostè and the plural vostès. These take the third person singular and plural forms of a verb. This descends from the third person form of address similar to "Your Highness" or "Your Grace".
